Digital Image Guidelines
See Audio/Video Specifications for guidelines how to create, compress, and submit digital audio and video files.
Please use the file specifications and submission guidelines listed on this page to submit digital images of faculty and student artwork.
Simply follow the general guidelines outlined below. (This page also includes additional submission information, which we encourage you to review.)
Digital Image File Specifications
- 500-pixel MINIMUM (height AND/OR width)
- RGB color type
- JPG*, GIF, PSD, and TIF formats preferred
- high resolution, or 300 dpi/ppi (pixels/dots per inch) recommended
- not to exceed 5 MB per file (if larger, use CCA Dropbox)
- include an image index (what's this?)
- Avoid further compressing JPG files; they're already compressed.
About Digital Images
Working with digital images for web publication almost always requires low-resolution images, which are easily derived from high-resolution images; however, in contrast, printed publications require high-resolution images as a standard, and low-resolution images cannot (satisfactorily) be made into high-resolution images.
We prefer to receive high-resolution ("print quality") images because we repurpose digital images for the college's many media needs.
If your project has both print- and web-based elements (i.e., your webpage will share images that are also in your printed materials), send only the high-resolution files (aka source files). We'll process the images appropriately for online publication and then deliver the higher-resolution images to the Publications Department.
(Read more about basic digital image guidelines.)
File-Naming Convention
File name: artist's first initial + artist's last name + a number from 01 to 08 + the appropriate file extension. (For example, if submitting three images as JPGs for the artist William Blake: wblake01.jpg, wblake02.jpg, and wblake03.jpg.)
Image Submission Guidelines
Place multiple images from the same source into a folder (i.e., one folder for each artist, faculty member, student, or academic program):
- Title each folder with the name of the corresponding student (or faculty member or department).
- Include an image index (see below)
- Submit to the web editor via the secure CCA Dropbox (more on this below).
- Compile the artist folders into a final folder and Zip, Stuff, or archive the collection as a single file attachment.
- Include an image index.
- Submit to the web editor via the secure CCA Dropbox.
Image Index and/or Contact Sheet
Use the secure CCA Dropbox to send file attachments directly to the web editor. Address your message to jnorrena@cca.edu.
The CCA Dropbox allows you to drop-off (upload) up to 10 files at a time (not to exceed 100MB total*). The recipient receives an automated email containing your information and instructions for downloading.
Note: if the file size exceeds 100MB, burn a CD (DVD if the file exceeds 700MB) and send it through interoffice mail to the Communications Office (attn: Web Editor). An image index or contact sheet is required.

Image Index and/or Contact Sheet
Back
CCA is firmly committed to crediting all artwork promoted on the website, yet the Communications staff cannot research this vital information for the thousands of images we handle during any given academic term.
A titled image index and/or contact sheet (.doc or .txt file) must accompany each submission (whether sending via the CCA Dropbox or CD/DVD through interoffice mail) and contain the following information for each image:
- academic program
- file name
- artist's/designer's name (including collaborators)
- title
- year produced
- description (e.g., media type, dimensions of work)
Example:
academic program: Illustration
File name: shickman01.jpg
Name: Stephen Hickman
Title: At the Entmoot (italicized)
Year: 2000
Description: Oil on canvas, 34 x 34 in.
