New Extended Ed Courses for Writers, Illustrators & Textile Enthusiasts

CCA's Extended Education program has expanded its summer course listing with new courses in writing, illustration, and textiles, further adding to the exciting variety of subjects already offered.

With registration deadlines just around the corner, be sure to register soon to ensure placement.

Extended Education offers new and returning CCA learners a unique opportunity to explore the traditional or the unexpected. Whether you work part- or full-time, courses are scheduled to accommodate even the busiest schedule.

This summer's new writing class, Memoir Writers Studio, is a hands-on, five-day studio guided by CCA degree instructor Marianne Rogoff to create new writing, receive feedback, and work closely with peers. Two special guests join the class to discuss students' work and share their readings: Georgeanne Brennan, an award-winning Bay Area writer; and Larry Habegger, the publisher of Travelers' Tales.

For more information on this unique program, visit the Memoir Writers Studio website.

For writers and illustrators of all skill levels who want to enter the world of illustrated children's books, Extended Education offers Children's Book Writing & Illustration this summer. The goal is to write and illustrate a picture book (from initial thumbnails to a complete book dummy), share feedback, and strengthen story and images. Students work in a step-by-step approach to develop irresistible, relatable characters, while focusing on fundamentals of plot, structure, voice, description, motivation, and dialogue. Students also speak with a guest editor from Chronicle Books.

A new textiles course, Thread, Brush & Dye, introduces students to a method known as free dyeing. With free dyeing threads are laid out on a table and become a blank canvas to be painted with dye. Come experiment with thread, brush, and dye to learn how these materials offer the possibility of a hybrid practice that lies somewhere between painting and weaving. Beginners learn the fundamentals of weaving, while intermediate and advanced students are encouraged to develop their technical vocabulary, conceptual focus, and individual direction.
