One of the oldest aesthetic traditions in the world, textiles is currently on the cutting edge of contemporary design, art practice, and critical inquiry, and CCA is home to one of the preeminent fiber departments in the country.
In this studio students focus on hand-produced surface embellishment and print techniques that can be applied to the creation of high-end and one-of-kind fashion. Half the course focuses on crocheting, appliqué, embroidery, and beading. The other half concentrates on surface design, including block printing, shibori (a traditional Japanese dyeing technique), and silkscreen printing. Students learn to design fabrics using imagery, repeated patterns, and colorways.
Textiles is an all-day studio.
