California College of the Arts
COURSE DESCRIPTION

ARTED100 Art Education 1

This course will focus on the questions: What is art education? What purpose does art education serve? How does art education fit into the broader world of education? Students will investigate the theory, philosophy and the world history that has made art education the multi-defined, sometimes controversial, subject matter it is today. Critique and the building of one's own personal philosophy of art education will be central to this class. Students will read, observe, reflect, discuss, and develop knowledgeable, supported points of view about the course's central questions. To support the student's work there will be lectures, readings, critiques and roundtable discussions focusing on central questions, studio experiences and visits to a variety of art education sites.
