FINAR604 FAS: Painting Focus

This seminar is open to fine arts students working in any medium. It is comprised of 3 parts: the Critique Group, Writings/Discussions, and Visiting Artists. The critique group fosters an intense and focused relationship by working closely together to expand the understanding of each student's particularized creative development within the context of a broadly defined painting language. Students expose their work to their peers and, through mediation, get the feedback necessary to: a) determine how their work is communicating, and b) learn how to defend their creations to their colleagues. Discussions explore the content, relevance, execution, and creative possibilities of the materials involved. Writings that focus on, but are not limited to, issues of contemporary painting are compiled into a reader and provide mandatory reading. Discussions about the writings take place within the studio context and respond to the issues raised by the critique group. Visiting Artists provide presentations about their work and then become part of the group, offering their multiple perspectives towards students' work.
