COURSE DESCRIPTION

ILLUS216 Illus Tools D: Editorial

What is "editorial illustration"? Traditionally, it has meant illustration that is commissioned by a magazine, newspaper or book publisher. Although this kind of illustration will be covered, this class will also seek to examine an expanded definition to include all illustration combined words or manuscript, including: storyboarding, graphic novels, political illustration, movie posters and manuscripts from all manner of printed material. The course will be taught by an experienced art director who will judge work and implement deadlines as found in the workplace. The student will be expected to read and analyze manuscripts and/or films to produce illustration images that add to the viewers experience and enlighten and explain the ideas presented. The assignments will be of short deadlines and require both a sketch phase and a finish phase. The class will also include discussions of basic typography and page layout.
