COURSE DESCRIPTION

METHS300 Cross-Cultural Health

This course will introduce students to theories, methods and practices of health in a cross-cultural context. We will examine the diverse aspects of health, sickness and healing through a medical anthropology perspective, including eastern and western influences. Drawing on readings, videos, lectures and group discussions, the class provides an awareness of how class, gender, age, sexual orientation, formal education, and disability impact conceptions of health and illness. Students will gain in-depth knowledge of one topic through a final project involving an interview and field research.

Methods Seminars are in-depth, interdisciplinary investigations of a particular problem or theme. These seminars focus on ways of knowing the world characteristic of the disciplines represented in the seminar, such that the forms or methods of investigation are as important as the subject matter itself.
