TEXTL350 CM:Fiber Sculpt, Form of Line

Beginning with a single thread, this course focuses on the construction of form through the interlinking of pliable linear elements. What is the expressive potential of traditional techniques such as knitting, crocheting lashing, netting, plaiting and twinning in the contemporary context? Unlike many other sculptural processes based on the properties of a specific material, these techniques are structural in nature and offer the artist infinite possibility for expression. Form can be two or three-dimensional, flexible or rigid, delicate or strong, small or large, translucent or opaque. In this class concepts such as singularity, multiplicity, transformation, functionality, and spatial dynamics are explored through material experimentation, research, and collaboration. Students are encouraged to pursue individual direction in projects that might include sculpture, body covering, and installation.
