COURSE DESCRIPTION

UDIST300 New Product Development

Taught in partnership with UC Berkeley's Haas Business School and Graduate Mechanical Engineering Department, this course challenges students to work in multi-disciplinary teams toward the design and development of new products and services. The course exposes students to a range of development methods within realistic corporate and customer objectives throughout the development cycle, from strategy to customer research to conceptual development to design and operational planning. The course reviews and integrates current sustainable design practices, principles, and processes with lectures, guest speakers, case studies, and studio projects. In addition, customer needs and desires are given important focus in order to develop meaningful offerings that have positive impact in terms of natural, human, and financial capital. Students work in teams on a semester-long project, developing market-verified products or services in a variety of industries and domains. This course will meet half-time in the East Bay on UC Berkeley's campus. This course is open to all students in all design departments, including the graduate design and architecture programs.

Interdisciplinary Studios extend a student's cross-school experience from Core Studio up into his or her upper division years. 3 units of Interdisciplinary Studio are required of all majors and must be completed in the junior or senior year.
