FINAR604 FAS: The Conceptual Line In this interdisciplinary critique-based seminar, we will emphasize drawing as the most immediate way to illustrate one's ideas. Rather than follow the trajectory of a traditional drawing class that focuses on technique, we will explore drawing strategies in contemporary art practice, including among others, the use of text, appropriation, and collage. Through slide lectures and discussions with visiting artist, we will consider the major aesthetic, philosophical, cultural and social themes that have shaped drawing in contemporary art. A primary objective of the class is to foster the exploration of your own art practice through mark making. While works produced in this class will be critiqued from a formal as well as a conceptual perspective, issues related to content will take precedence over technical instruction or ability. The goal is to encourage an exploration of the breadth of meaning in your own work through drawing. |
