FINAR604 FAS: Teaching Practicum The Teaching Practicum is a course designed for the graduate students to participate in a teaching team by assisting instructors who teach the undergraduate First Year Studios: Core classes, visual studies introductions and studio introduction courses. The graduate instructor will work with the teacher and assigned class providing assistance, and will be given the opportunity to present their own work, participate in and occasionally lead discussions and critiques, deliver an assignment (through development with the instructor) and otherwise contribute to the course and curriculum. The purpose of the course is to increase the student's knowledge and skills for effective teaching. The experience will widen the qualifications of the graduate student as potential instructors in academia and in studio practice. The seminar meetings are in addition to the undergraduate classroom participation, and will examine the role and structure of college level, art education and emphasizes curricular development and syllabi, planning strategies using the academic calendar, school policies and expectations; record keeping; grading and evaluation standards; and instructional approaches. The course will also inform the students on other preparation materials for job seekers in the education field. Seminars will be supplemented by guest speakers, a course reader, and other texts. |
