MARCH640 BT: Digital Poetics

In recent years the culture of digital fabrication has heavily influenced the culture of architecture and architectural education. This seminar will examine the poetics of craft through the lens of digital design and CAD/CAM fabrication and rapid prototyping. The seminar will explore CAD/CAM techniques and invest heavily in a process of designing digitally and the translation from the computer to 1:1 scale, modular, light weight building components specifically designed for a building installation. Light weight materials such as light weight concrete, silicon, polypropylene, aluminum, paper, etc? will be explored. The primary investigation in the seminar will be to design an everyday building component at full scale. However, the designer will be posed with the critical question: 'How can the everyday building component become an extraordinary and poetic artifact?' Students are required to have advance knowledge of computer modeling programs.
