COURSE DESCRIPTION

VISCR608 GE: CA Tidalwave

This seminar will explore the recent resurgence of Feminist Art as both a field of study and a category of contemporary cultural production. We will investigate historical manifestations of feminist art in relation to theoretical, artistic, and political developments of the late 20th century as background for in-depth analysis of contemporary exhibitions, publications, and initiatives exploring (and contributing to) the legacy of the so-called Frminist Art Movement. We will pay particular attention to the catalogues and reviews generated by "Global Feminisms: New Directions in Contemporary Art" (Brookly Art Museum, 2007) and Wack! Art and the Feminist Revolution (Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, 2007).
