California College of the Arts
COURSE DESCRIPTION

DIVSM300 Public Art & Intervention
June 2–July 3, 2008

This course addresses the participatory leadership roles of artists in a multicultural society, investigating the history and legacy of murals, public interventions, public art, and community and collaborative art projects in Latin America and the Bay Area. The investigation focuses on artists who work in communities or within the criminal justice system, as well as those who address civil and human rights issues in their art. Students examine how these artists create and establish liaisons with members of the community in order to develop the narrative, theme, and subject matter of murals, public art projects, or public interventions. The class also researches art education settings, art organizations, and art exhibition spaces where this kind of collaborative and community art may be exhibited and presented.
