COURSE DESCRIPTION

ELECT244 Sierre: Interdisc Studio
June 30–July 18, 2008

This interdisciplinary course, held at Ecole Cantonale d'Art du Valais in Sierre, focuses on multimedia works on paper, photography, digital processes, and writing. Students work to create both individual and collaborative large-scale installation projects for a final exhibition. In addition to studio time, the course includes group discussions, in-depth meetings with the instructor, and field trips. Excursions include a trip to the medieval town of Sion and a visit to the glacier of Aletsch. The class surveys the works of artists, architects, designers, philosophers, illustrators and writers through the underlying concept of mapping and examines the distinguishing characteristics of mapping vs. tracing via slide lectures, readings, and research. Through individual mapping projects, the students explore self-reflexive modes that seek to combine spatial representations with temporal ones to create new found forms. The objective of this course is to expand technical ability, conceptual processes, and personal vision by introducing new visual vocabulary, media, and methods to the student's practice. Assignments include a written proposal, map project, four page research essay, and final presentation/exhibition of works. Lakeside housing, studio space, and computer labs are provided at Ecole Cantonale in Sierre, a small town nestled in the Alps. Bicycles will be provided for transportation and excursions around town. This course fulfills a studio elective requirement; or for students who achieve junior or senior standing by the end of spring 2007, this course may count for an Upper Division Interdisciplinary studio requirement.
