DIVSM300 On Becoming American (or Not)
FALL 2012

Diversity Studies Seminars are in-depth experiences in the study of multiculturalism and cultural diversity in American society and in societies that have impacted American society. Courses expose students to and inform students about the contributions of African Americans, Asian Americans, Native Americans and Latinos to American culture, history, and society.

This seminar explores the ways in which American identity is investigated by a variety of fiction and non-fiction writers, poets, and filmmakers. For most Americans this identity is an unquestionable given; for others, usually immigrants and their American children, to be an American implies a transformation - the result of a process of negotiation with the culture outside of the boundaries of the familiar home. We will delve into the work of these writers and filmmakers to understand the larger issue of assimilation as we examine the relationship between official identity and the mutual willingness of acceptance.
