DIVSM300 African American Art
SPRING 2012

Diversity Studies Seminars are in-depth experiences in the study of multiculturalism and cultural diversity in American society and in societies that have impacted American society. Courses expose students to and inform students about the contributions of African Americans, Asian Americans, Native Americans and Latinos to American culture, history, and society.

In its various roles as source, inspiration, and guide, African art is firmly entrenched in the Western world. Recognized by twentieth century moderns in Europe as a rich locus of form, style, and concept, it has altered aesthetic cannons and changed inexorably the course of modern art in the West. The course will concentrate on exposition and research in both the areas of African-influenced Western art and Afro-Atlantic retentions while referring back to original African sources.
