This design course offers an exploration of fundamental principles and issues of architectural design via abstract design projects. Students interested in architecture, interior design, landscape design, engineering, building construction, gallery and theater design, sculpture, and fine arts create design solutions, moving from beginning sketches through development to final models. Students learn to develop architectural vocabulary and thinking and address formal, symbolic, and contextual concepts of architecture. The course consists of several progressive projects, beginning with the fundamental elements of entry, path, and goal. It concludes with the design of a dwelling on a steep slope.

Bring to first class: architect's scale, X-ACTO knife with box of No. 11 blades, 18" cork-bottomed metal ruler, Elmer's glue, and a pencil.
