Early modern art provided the key ideas for contemporary developments in art and design. This course covers the development of modern art from the 1850s through the 1990s, exploring key movements, artists, and critical ideas in relation to cultural history and the history of ideas. Course topics include Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism, Expressionism, Cubism, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, Modernism, and Postmodernism. Discussion will address each movement's intrinsic meaning and unique contribution to twentieth-century culture, as well as the influence of photography, performance, and installation art.
