Students learn beginning bookmaking techniques using traditional bookbinding materials. Following hands-on demonstrations, each participant produces several sample books. Newly acquired skills enable students to create imaginative book forms that provide a unique way to present their art or photographs. Participants are encouraged to bring any special papers they would like to include in their books. The materials fee covers paper, book cloth, and binding supplies for sample books.
Bring to class: scissors, razor knife/X-ACTO, ruler, triangle, and bone folder.
OAK 202
Instructor: Thea Sizemore
Sat. & Sun., 9 a.m.–5 p.m., July 19 & 26, August 2 & 3
4 sessions. $320. Noncredit. Prerequisite: none
Contemporary uses of traditional printing processes can provide a unique tactile quality to the work of designers, book artists, and printmakers. In this two-weekend workshop, participants learn how to combine traditional letterpress and photopolymer-plate-printing techniques to express their ideas. Polymer plates enable students to incorporate personally selected images (either line art or black-and-white photos) and/or computer-generated images with text blocks. The class tackles complex type lockups and polymer-plate creation. (Note: photo images will be printed in halftone, rather than continuous tone.)
Bring to first class: project ideas, camera-ready artwork, and text. Students are responsible for image scanning, film production, photopolymer plates, and paper expenses.
