Garment Structures: Intro to Sewing

Students receive an introduction to the fundamental applications of sewing techniques, the sewing machine, and garment construction. Students gain awareness of the studio, industrial sewing machines, and pattern-making tools. Instructor demonstrations and student practice play an integral role in this course. With hands-on experience, students complete several projects: a standard sleeved shirt, a basic skirt, and/or a pair of pants.

Students are required to purchase two or three commercial patterns and fabric for their projects. A materials list is provided the first day of class.

Introduction to Knitwear

12 sessions. $1,700. Pass/Fail* (3 credits). Prerequisite: beginning-level fashion courses or instructor permission

Students learn knitwear design using single-bed machines, as well as an understanding of the appropriate yarns for both standard gauge and chunky-gauge knitting machines. Basic knit stitches are introduced and students also develop a strong sense of knit fabric qualities, including how the choice of yarns, tension, and stitch affect such qualities. Proper machine operation is emphasized to ensure participants become adept in their handling of the knit tools. More advanced stitching techniques are introduced througout the course. Fashion designs for knits is an integral part of each ongoing class project.
