Introduction to Typography

This course examines typography's five-hundred-year history, introduces basic typographic principles, and helps students to implement these principles. Students gain an understanding of typographic classification and form subtlety through a detailed study of type specimens as they learn to identify letterforms by style, tonal intensity, and personality. The course also explores the formal characteristics of typography through a series of hands-on projects in which students experiment with type size, weight, style, space, movement, and contrast.

Bring to first class: sketchbook, pencils, pen, conte crayons.

Identity Design

10 sessions. $285. Noncredit. Prerequisite: an introductory graphic design course (or equivalent)

An introduction to corporate identity design, this course covers topics such as strategic analysis and corporate identity development and implementation. Through a series of projects, each student develops a corporate identity, leveraging color, form, and typography to create logos that are meaningful, memorable, and applicable to letterhead, signage, and multimedia. The course also examines the role of corporate identity in contemporary society and its cultural and economic importance.

Computer and printer access are recommended; however, computer skills are not covered.
