Introduction to Jewelry Design

This course explores basic metalsmithing and jewelry processes. Students are introduced to various techniques for cutting metal, methods of joinery, soldering, forming, fabrication, and various means of surface treatment. Students may work with copper, brass, or sterling silver as they create jewelry or other small forms.
Toolkit deposit: each student is required to submit a check in the amount of $140 (payable to CCA) at the first session. Checks are returned to students on the last day of the course upon return of the toolkit. A materials list will be sent to registrants. Materials fee covers some copper, silver, and additional supplies.
Hand Engraving Workshop

Hand engraving is one of the oldest techniques used to carve an envisioned image onto metal. This technique is accomplished with the use of gravers that are made of hardened steel and wooden handles. Participants learn how to prepare and use popular varieties of gravers and practice engraving on copper, brass and silver. The workshop explores ornamental, pictorial, relief and letter engraving.
Lab fee includes silver, brass, and copper rings and platelets. A materials list will be provided at registration.

In the Loop: Textile Techniques in Metal

Interlacing and looping wire can be used to create intricate embellishments or three-dimensional sculptural objects. This course explores textile techniques in metal for both structure and ornamentation. Students produce samples of metal fabric in a variety of techniques including weaving, knotting, and crochet. The class includes an image presentation and discussion of historical applications and contemporary artists who have used these techniques in their work.
Lab fee covers all metal used in the workshop. A materials list will be provided at registration.
