Don't miss this special opportunity to study with a visiting artist from Italy— professional Italian mosaicist Carolina Zanelli, a former instructor at the internationally renowned Mosaics School of Spilimbergo. Zanelli teaches students how to create their own mosaic (mosaic uses the expressive materials of colored marble, tile, and glass). It has been used as architectural adornment, such as the cut tile mosaics with which Gaudí embellished Parc Guell in Barcelona, and it has been incorporated into furniture design, such as patio tabletops. Participants will inlay cut tile or glass on wood panels.
OAK 206
Instructor: Carolina Zanelli
Thurs.-Sun., 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m., June 12-15
4 sessions. $280; $110 lab fee payable at registration (covers smalto for each student). Noncredit. Prerequisite: previous mosaic experience
A four-day workshop wherein participants work with smalto, translucent glass fragments that capture light in mosaics of luminous beauty. After learning how to cut smalto with a mosaic hammer, students create two small mosaics in this ancient material: one in the traditional Byzantine style; the other in the modern style the prestigious Mosaic School of Spilimbergo in Italy teaches. Carolina Zanelli, a visiting Italian mosaicist who taught for six years at the Mosaic School provides the examples of each technique.
Bring to first class: smalto hammer, hardie, and chunk.
