Introduction to Digital Photography

10 sessions. $300; $10 lab fee payable at registration. Noncredit. Prerequisite: basic computer skills

This introductory course provides the fundamental camera and computer skills necessary to produce interesting digital photographs. While exploring creative approaches to digital photography, students familiarize themselves with basic camera operation, shutter speeds, apertures, image enhancement, file uploads to the computer, and printing issues.

Participants learn how to meet electronic prepress industry standards and investigate color management and large- and small-format printing. The class also includes discussions of contemporary issues in digital photography.

Note: students must have a digital camera with manual functions and at least five megapixels.

Bring to first class: some slides, negatives, and/or printsyou have made; blank CD or portable hard drive on which to burn images; digital camera with instruction manual; fresh batteries. Students are responsible for digital output, ink, and paper expenses. One student per Macintosh computer.
