Charles Dilworth
Charles Dilworth is principal with STUDIOS Architecture in San Francisco. His projects have appeared in Architectural Record, World Architecture, GA Document, and Architecture magazine, as well as the San Jose Mercury News and the San Francisco Chronicle. In addition, he has received numerous awards from the AIA; California Council, San Francisco, East Bay, and Santa Clara chapters; as well as two American architecture awards: from the Chicago Athenaeum and an Architectural Record / Business Week Award.
Dilworth’s notable completed projects include the Silicon Graphics North Charleston Site (now the Google Headquarters) and the Silicon Graphics Entry Site Building (now the Computer History Museum), both in Mountain View, California, as well as California Department of Health Services Phase 3 in Richmond, California.
Projects currently under construction include the Santa Teresa Branch Library in San Jose, the Social Sciences and Management Building at UC Merced, and a new gateway building at Santana Row in San Jose.
Dilworth's work in Silicon Valley during the 1990s embodied his interest in bringing humanity, collegiality, and a sense of social order to corporate architecture. Concerned about the placeless, commoditized nature of commercial architecture, he sought to bring new intelligence to the arena through the transplantation of urban precepts and traditional academic campus hierarchies.
In recent years Dilworth has devoted his practice largely to public works, where he has been intent on transferring the lessons of his Silicon Valley projects to invigorate civic typologies with a renewed sense of collegiality and openness.
Dilworth earned his MArch from the Yale School of Architecture in 1983. Prior to joining STUDIOS in 1988, he worked as a designer with Skidmore Owings and Merrill, Frank O. Gehry and Associates, MBT Associates, and Tanner & VanDine.
In addition to teaching at CCA Dilworth has been a visiting critic at UC Berkeley and serves on the design review committee for UC Merced and the dean’s council of the Yale School of Architecture.
