
Darren Blum is an award-winning industrial designer who has more than 15 years' experience at some of Silicon Valley's top design firms, including IDEO, Lunar Design, and Pentagram. This experience, along with a strategic vision for making great products, keeps him in demand in his current role as an independent design consultant—a career in which he has been pursuing product design initiatives with a focus on renewable energy and sustainability.
During his five-year tenure at Pentagram, Darren was director of 3D development and collaborated on various consumer electronics product initiatives for such industry leaders as Dell, HP, Microsoft, Amazon, and Logitech. Before Pentagram he launched Tangent Design, a design consultancy for many top Bay Area industrial design studios, providing design, strategy, 3D modeling, and rendering services.
Blum was featured on the Discovery Channel program The Launch and has been interviewed in the Wall Street Journal regarding sustainability. His work has been featured in The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design, and he has had work published in BusinessWeek, Business 2.0, Popular Science, I.D., and Design Secrets: 50 Real-life Product Design Projects Uncovered. His designs have received numerous awards: Business Week IDEA Gold Award, multiple IDSA Industrial Design Excellence Awards, and iF Product Design Award.
Darren’s passion for mixing music presented him the opportunity to design the djPod, earning him an Industrial Design Excellence award and publication in I.D. magazine. He is an active community member, being a certified Community Emergence Response Team (CERT) member and bringing his design thinking to the tools and manuals being used for safety education.
