David Gill was born in Oakland, California and raised by parents who are both practicing artists and teachers. Growing up in a creative environment amongst artists, writers and educators inspired the pursuit of an education in Architecture from California College of Arts and Crafts (now CCA).

Studying under practicing professionals at the newly-formed school of architecture, Gill was an eager participant in the evolving curriculum. The close bond in studio between academic and professional worlds led directly to work with small design-centered offices as a designer for Kuth / Ranieri and then a project designer for Baum / Thornley Architects. He earned his architect’s license and established his own practice in 2000. Gill has had the opportunity to work on a wide variety of project types including furniture, laboratories, art installations, housing, museums and institutions.

In 2006, Gill joined Mark Horton / Architecture as a project architect. Projects here include the Bank of Stockton, House of Air, the Computer History Museum and Temple Sinai as well as the conceptual proposal for the Contemporary Art Museum at the Presidio. MH/A is designing a community arts center for Shipyard Community Arts, an organization for which Gill also serves as a steering committee member.

Gill has been a guest critic and guest lecturer at numerous academic institutions, and most recently co-taught with Peter Pfau a Comprehensive Building Design Studio at CCA. This studio explored the subject of materials and meaning, adopting David Ireland (one of Gill’s professors) and his home/studio as the studio’s project program and muse.
