Tom Crabtree was born in West Yorkshire, England, in 1975. He graduated from Leeds Metropolitan University in 1999 with a degree in graphic art and design.

He then went on to work at two of London's most-acclaimed design studios: MadeThought and Spin, working on a diverse range of projects spanning logo and brand identity, packaging, books, catalogs, 3D installations, posters, and record covers.

In 2007 Tom relocated to San Francisco to work as an art director at Apple, where he was responsible for packaging design and art direction for numerous hardware and software products, most notably the award-winning iPhone packaging.

In 2009 Tom left Apple and founded Manual Creative—a San Francisco–based design and branding consultancy with clients that include Gap, Levi's, and Slice.

Tom frequently writes for design publications—both online and for print—and enjoys collecting European modernist posters from the 1960s and 1970s.
