Squalus Acanthus
1996

Plastic, fan; 8 feet by 11 feet by 25 feet. Installation Shot DeLand, Florida.

Squalus Acanthus is a large inflated object that is an anatomical model of a shark brain. Like a giant Ernst Haeckel drawing come alive, the project reflects upon the relation of art, evolution and the animal legacy in human consciousness. In this installation, it rests in a chapel dedicated to Ben S. Stetson, who is son of the maker of the first widely used cowboy hat, introduced in 1865, and worn by Buffalo Bill, Calamity Jane, Annie Oakley and the Lone Ranger.
