Voussour Cloud was designed by IwamotoScott and installed at the SCIARc Gallery as part of their running series of invited experimental installation/exhibition/fabrication projects. Voussoir Cloud deployed computation at each step in the design, analysis and fabrication processes. A structurally-optimized porosity pattern organizes 1300 laser-cut translucent wood veneer modules, each one formed with either one, two or three curved folded edges so as to add structural stiffness. Voussoirs, traditionally heavy stone elements in a masonry vault or arch, are here rendered extremely thin, lightweight and translucent, in an array adapted to the specifics of the gallery site. The project was carried out with engineering collaboration by Buro Happold, and fabrication/installation assistance by SCIArc students. Voussour Cloud received an R&D Award from Architect magazine and an Honor Award in the Wood Design Awards.
