brass & stainless steel
(32" x 2" x 100")
The Church was completed in 1903 and is considered the University's architectural crown jewel. The interior's styles reflect a Victorian eclecticism that combines many architectural elements including Romanesque and Byzantine influences. This handrail (lower section) was designed and manufactured for the front alter to integrate seamlessly with existing, historical metalwork. The custom engineering of a solution for securing the uprights with minimal intrusions to the marble was a critical element of its design. The project was overseen by Leslie Bone, Conservator at the De Young Museum, San Francisco.
