OPspace, ZERO Biennial
2010

CITY/SPACE/SHARE is a pilot project intended to revitalize vacant storefronts and transform urban activity in the City Center of San Jose through spatial strategies that recuperate the street frontage, promote productive inhabitation and initiate micro-urbanisms that support the local neighborhood. City/space/share operates similar to the zipcar strategy, where spatial and infrastructural resources are shared among multiple users, acting as a public interface that is programmed to support new local economies. Through the design of flexible and temporary architectural installations, that are embedded into existing storefronts and outdoor areas, city/space/share enables the implementation of different types of urban programs, activities and events that are supported by the architectural performance and programming of these embedded urban devices. The combination of mobile urban hardware and diverse programming will be structured through organizational strategies that curate different types of possible occupations while allowing the community to interact with and inhabit this public interface in a way that democratizes their ability to participate in, and create an urban community. In this project, urban regeneration and architectural performance are combined with creative entrepreneurship to activate local networks, partnerships and participants while generating a new iconic brandscape that supports ongoing strategies for micro-urban revitalization.
