Glass

The multidisciplinary curriculum of the Glass Program couples a vigorous foundation in craft with concept-oriented projects. We offer a comprehensive education in the techniques, materials, history, and philosophy of glass as a medium for art making.

The program acknowledges the value of a traditional academic structure while also incorporating diverse subject matter and interdisciplinary approaches. The curriculum focuses on contemporary fine-art practice and embraces drawing as an integral element in all projects and critiques.

The program's resources include a two-bench hot shop with a glass furnace and facilities for casting, fusing, and coldworking. The Glass Program has close ties to the Sculpture Program, and our students can also take advantage of that program's well-equipped facilities.

Students of the discipline of glass are custodians of the best traditions of the past. They are also expected to understand and be committed to the pursuit of new paradigms in contemporary art. Our faculty members, themselves professional artists, believe that students who use glass as their primary medium should be rigorous thinkers and creators with the ability and dexterity to realize their most adventurous ideas.

Glass Program alumni include exhibiting artists, proprietors of their own studios, and many instructors who teach at colleges around the country.
