Main advisors are determined by the faculty and Fine Arts chair on the basis of the student's admissions portfolio. A main advisor is in the student's area of concentration: ceramics, glass, jewelry / metal arts, media arts, painting/drawing, photography, printmaking, social practices, sculpture, textiles, or furniture.
Main advisors assist students with curricular issues as well as mentoring them in their studio practice.
Students take 2 units with their main advisor each semester.
The Graduate Office will provide new students with their assigned advisor's phone number and email address.
Students are then responsible for contacting their advisor to arrange a meeting schedule for the semester.
It is possible to for a student to change a main advisor after the first semester.
The petition to change a main advisor is available in the Graduate Office, or you can download the petition PDF. Petitions require the signatures of the former and new main advisor alike, and the chair of the Fine Arts Program.
Students who feel it necessary to change their area of concentration during their course of study must complete a petition for the change. Petitions are available in the Graduate Office, or you can download the petition PDF.
Petitions require the signatures of the former program chair, the new program chair, and the chair of the Fine Arts Program. Changes must be approved by the new program's faculty and may require a significant application process and review.
