Review Process

Students are required to undergo a formal committee review at the end of each semester. The composition of review committees will be determined by the Fine Arts chair.

Reviews are scheduled for approximately 45 minutes.

The review schedule will be posted outside the Graduate Office at least one week prior to the reviews.

Review Results

Possible review results are as follows:

  • Pass
  • Pass with Reservations
  • Probation
  • Fail

Students who receive a Pass with Reservations or Probation are required to complete a re-review within the first two weeks of the next semester. Students who do not pass the second review will be asked to take a leave of absence from the program.

A student who fails the review will be asked to leave the program immediately. If the student later wishes to re-enroll in the program, the student must go through the regular admissions process via the Enrollment Services Office.

Advancement Review

The Advancement Review will occur near the end of the first year of study (in March or April).

The review committee, determined by the Fine Arts chair, will be scheduled to visit the student's studio or other arranged space. The review will be scheduled for approximately 45 minutes.

The review schedule will be posted outside the Graduate Office at least one week prior to the review.

Candidacy Review

Candidacy reviews are scheduled for early November of the student's second year of study. The review focus will be on the thesis abstract and the student's work. (The finer details of writing structure will be examined in individual meetings with the student's thesis advisor.)

Final Review

This final assessment will include the quality of the thesis exhibition and the written thesis. The final review is typically conducted in April.

Review committee members must receive a final draft of the student's thesis at least one week prior to the review meeting.
