Studio Practice is a course of individualized study with an instructor, which typically takes place in the student's studio. Students may take Studio Practice units with CCA faculty or other art professionals, subject to the approval of their advisor and the Fine Arts chair.
Through this experience, students will gather diverse opinions about the efficacy of their working methods and formal vocabulary and will gather new resources that will inform their research and practice.
Each unit of Studio Practice is equivalent to approximately three hours of meeting time. It is the student's responsibility to arrange a meeting schedule with their Studio Practice instructors.
Studio Practice units are graded pass/no pass. Students who do not fulfill their meeting requirements or who do not show satisfactory progress may be given a no pass grade by their instructor.
Students will also be responsible for evaluating their Studio Practice instructor through the college's standardized evaluation form, near the end of each semester.
In the first semester, students will be assigned to work with a main advisor, including two additional faculty members (each assignment carries 2 units), for a total of 6 units of Studio Practice.
After the first semester, students are required to do 2 units with their main advisor, and they will choose their other Studio Practice instructors in consultation with their advisor.
In order to work with faculty or other art professionals who have not been preapproved by the Graduate Office, students must get approval from the Fine Arts chair. After the student receives approval, a Studio Practice Contract (PDF) needs to be completed.
Forms must be returned to the Graduate Office before the end of the add/drop period. Incomplete forms or forms submitted to the Graduate Office after the add/drop deadline will be assessed a $200 late fee.
See Add/Drop/Withdrawal for add/drop deadlines.
Each Fine Arts student is assigned a studio at CCA. Students are entitled to a studio for four consecutive semesters only.
Students have 24-hour access to their studios, including the summer between the first and second year of their program.
Students must adhere to studio policies as dictated by the program and are required to sign a studio contract.
