Hugh Hynes

Hugh Hynes is a cofounder of PROTOinc, an architecture and planning practice based in San Francisco. The firm has undertaken a wide variety of commercial and institutional projects that are informed by research into adaptive architectural prototypes, scenario planning, and catastrophe/ contingency tactics for the built environment. Acting as consultants, PROTOinc has collaborated with a diverse array of design professionals, including branding firms, structural engineers, and industrial/ interface designers.

While at Columbia University Hugh received the school's highest honor for design—the McKim Award—as well as awards for his work in history and theory. A series of grants and fellowships has supported his research projects in the United Kingdom, Japan, and Russia on mechanisms of ex-urban proliferation, brownfield remediation, and sprawl.

Hugh's work has been featured in a number of publications, including Index Architecture, Chronomorphology: Active Time in Architecture and Polar Inertia: Journal of Nomadic and Popular Culture.
