ILLUS-220

This course is designed to cover the formal principals, concepts, and techniques in the art of drawing and the act of seeing. Emphasis will be on the development of visual vocabulary in order to better understand the language of expressive drawing. This will be a rigorous course, with numerous drawing exercises to develop important skills: gesture, schematic drawings, composition/design, perspective, light + shadow, etc. The student can expect the execution of many drawings ranging from the quick sketch to the long study. Once certain skills and concepts have been well understood, we will move into un-chartered territory, i.e. expressive mark-making, structuring pictorial space, experimentation with different tools, materials, and methodology, the process of abstraction, etc. Risk taking will be encouraged. At least one field trip will be planned. Open to all students.
