Water Media for Illustration will focus on the practice and development of two media: ink and watercolor (transparent and opaque). The course will explore application, media and technique in ink, watercolor, and gouache. In the ink section, students will learn how to use ink with pen, quill, and brush. Various ink media will also be introduced, including India Ink, dye and pigment based ink, and liquid acrylics. Some techniques featured will be: cross hatching, silhouettes, flat shading, feathering, and inkwash. In the watercolor portion of the class students will learn how to create watercolor washes, gradients and blending as well as building up values and perfecting detail. An assortment of watercolor media will also be introduced, including watercolor dyes and opaque watercolor (or gouache). Various masking techniques and brush techniques will be demonstrated. Additionally, the class will explore different paper types from cold press watercolor paper to hot press Bristol, and brush types from natural hair to synthetic. Technique will be the main focus of all lessons and exercises. Each class will concentrate on a specific ink or watercolor technique. Students will be required to complete a series of illustrations demonstrating technique and application. Students will be required to purchase specific supplies for the class.
