Dugald Stermer has worked as a freelance illustrator for the past 25 years. He designed the official medals for the 1984 Olympic Games; illustrated a wildlife series for the Los Angeles Times; has worked on campaigns for Levis, the Iams Company, the San Diego Zoo, Jaguar Cars, Brooks Brothers, BMW, and Nike; and has created editorial illustrations for, among others, Time, Esquire, the New York Times, the New Yorker, GQ, and Rolling Stone. Other projects include book jackets for Pantheon Books, posters and prints for various publishers, and continuing work on his forthcoming book, Visage.
He is the author of four previous books: The Art of Revolution (McGraw-Hill, 1970) with Susan Sontag, Vanishing Creatures (Lancaster-Miller, 1981), Vanishing Flora (Abrams, 1995), and Birds & Bees (HarperCollins, 1995). He gave the keynote addresses at both the International Conference of Natural Science Illustrators in 2000 (Portugal) and the International Conference of Medical Illustrators in 2001. He is currently on the San Francisco Arts Commission and on the board of the Illustrators' Partnership of America.
