Media Arts

The Media Arts Program has three areas of focus: experimental film and video, narrative film and video, and new digital media. The coursework emphasizes both theory and practice: the conceptual framework of contemporary media art and technical skills applicable to the time-based arts.

Students in the experimental film and video area study recent developments in the field, including gallery-based installation and projection, abstraction, animation, narrative, and multichannel presentation.

The narrative film and video area immerses students in the contemporary cinematic dialogue, combining historical perspective with state-of-the-art production skills to explore a variety of narrative possibilities within independent filmmaking practice.

Students in the new digital media area combine hands-on projects in electronics, fabrication, and programming with independent research and in-class discussion to explore emerging artistic practices where media, design, and technology intersect.

Media Arts students are encouraged to take coursework in all three of these areas and in other CCA departments such as Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Sculpture, and Writing and Literature.

The Bay Area is home to major film festivals, a thriving alternative-media scene, and nationally recognized production facilities. The program draws on the exceptional talent in the region and provides access to key artists working in the field today. It also offers a wide range of cutting-edge technological resources and takes advantage of Silicon Valley's proximity.

Media Arts students work closely with faculty members to develop rigorous courses of study, pursue internships, and engage in community collaborations. Our graduates are prepared to apply for advanced degree programs or to become practicing professional artists in the media industry and the art world.
