Draw 2:Black & White as Color
An introduction to the valued resource of the human figure as a subject in art. Working from male and female models, nude and costumed, we will try many approaches: objective (clearly seen), subjective (deeply felt) and, of course, all shades in between; quick gestural sketches as well as extended studies; the whole figure, and details of the figure; and the figure and space as compositional elements. We will try a great many drawing materials. A detailed list will be provided in class.
This class is where you learn how to compose the "values" of light and dark as distinct from "volumes", how values relate to colors, and how colors relate to each other. As with Visual Organization (the flip side of this class), each new concept is introduced sequentially and there is plenty of time for practice. A good introduction to painting if you can already draw, and also appropriate for those currently painting but still struggling with the "nuts and bolts".
