Community Arts

The Bay Area has a vibrant tradition of arts activism, from San Francisco's Beat generation to Berkeley's Free Speech Movement and the rise of African American, Asian, Latino, and Native American movements for social justice. Through studio practice and projects developed in collaboration with community organizations, students discover how art can be a powerful force for social change. Using a variety of visual media, they learn how to communicate social and political issues of personal importance, how to use their own art practices to give voice to underrepresented communities, and how visual art can contribute to community revitalization. The course includes off-site field trips to community arts organizations and lectures by renowned artist-activists.
