In this immersive course, participants practice the craft of writing in a dynamic, artistic atmosphere. Using short works by great writers as models, in addition to drawing parallels and inspiration from the visual arts and music, student writers produce their own poetry, stories, and creative nonfiction.
In-class prompts, draft writing, peer workshops, revision, and instructor feedback give students the opportunity to explore their distinctive voices while investigating essential aspects of craft. The course considers description, imagery, rhythm, point of view, character, tension, epiphany, and resolution as vehicles for further developing student's work.
CCA's Pre-College program concludes with a campuswide exhibition of work produced during the summer from all departments. Creative Writing's contribution to the final show has included a public reading in the café and a display in Oliver Art Center to showcase student writing.
Student's projects have taken the shape of a published pamphlet, collage, illustrated broadsides, installations in the gallery and other forms of book arts. Studying writing at an art school has given students the unique opportunity to do collaborations with other disciplines while delving into the craft of writing.
Creative Writing is an all-day course.
The Bay Area has a rich literary history and a vibrant contemporary writing scene. Its surroundings are fantastic and the resources that inspire the creative process are bountiful. From Jack London's stories of the wild to the counter-culture force of Lawrence Ferlinghetti and the Beat poets, writers have been inspired by the landscape and energy of the Bay Area.
Spend this summer immersed in writing within a region celebrated for its pioneering originality and experience such sites as the legendary City Lights Bookstore in San Francisco's famous North Beach, San Francisco Center for the Book, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, to name just a few literary iconoclastic locations.
