This course will provide a historical introduction to aesthetics and Western philosophy that begins with Plato's idealist theories and closes with postmodernism. Classes will be organized around selected texts by major philosophers chosen on the basis of readability and availability as well as their philosophical importance. Lecture/discussion sessions will seek to relate the readings to their cultural milieu and to the ideas of earlier and later philosophies.
