SOCSC-200

The purpose of the course is to analyze the City under various emotional perspectives: fear, amusement, joy, anger, desire, irony. Taken as an emotional kaleidoscope, the city will be specifically interpreted from a socio-anthropological point of view in order to engage questions of urban identity and dynamics in their ethnic, class and gender aspects. We will focus on urban emotional landscapes and so-called 'emerging subjectivities' that compose the contemporary city from a cross-cultural and comparative perspective that includes both Euro-American megacities such as Los Angeles or Paris and non-European global cities such as Rio de Janeiro, Tijuana, Tangiers. An historical overview of various urban anthropological approaches to the city will include in-depth discussions of a complex set of overlapping thematics: citizenship, transnationalism, migration, power, border control, and surveillance
