Summer at CCA

Summer ESL & Art Studio
for International Students

This six-week, summer program introduces international students to CCA and the San Francisco Bay Area, while improving their English skills. Many international students find that they need additional language support to succeed in an American college. Some have to take an extra semester or two to graduate. By attending the CCA Summer ESL and Art Studio program, students may move more quickly into college-level English and become better equipped to participate fully in their studio courses. Participants earn 3 college credits.

  • Refine your English language skills in an art studio setting. At CCA's San Francisco campus, students work on their English language skills, including reading, writing, and speaking about art, design and architecture. Students also engage in art-related activities, developing skills that will help them succeed in the American studio classroom, including how to talk about their work and how to participate in group critiques. Guest artists visit the class, giving participants the chance to interact with American artists, viewing and discussing their work. Students have the opportunity to receive individual, one-on-one, English language tutoring.

  • Explore San Francisco and the Bay Area. In addition to classroom studies, students visit major art museums, such as San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, de Young Museum, and Asian Art Museum, and experience San Francisco's historic tourist attractions (visit www.mustseesanfrancisco.com). Several weekend and evening field trips are scheduled; for example, students attend First Thursday, a monthly event in which downtown San Francisco art galleries hold evening artist receptions. While exploring the Bay Area, students gain practical skills, such as how to use public transportation systems and libraries.
