This course will deal with the social/political aspects of cinema and video. A great range of films will be analyzed in terms of their ideological assumptions. Towards this end, the disciplines of structuralism and semiology will be employed. A major component of the course revolves around the positioning of women within narrative structures. There also will be lectures on the Vietnam film and MTV. Films and readings will be chosen to illustrate these issues.
