Beginning with the romantic revivals along with the development of new styles in the 19th century, this course will explore the evolution and organization of interior space in both domestic and commercial buildings. The use of new materials and new technology, along with the changing use of interior elements, ornamentation, pattern, and furniture forms to accommodate new life styles, will be covered. New principles of design, design philosophy, and the growth of the interior design profession in the 20th century will be topics of discussion.
